We specialise in using Forum Theatre as a training tool in various areas:
- Management & Staff - (handling disputes, appraisals, discipline, substance abuse, bullying)
- Seminars on communication, job interviews and pitching ideas.
Forum Theatre is NOT role play! We feel that a lot of people are put off by role play.
- The participants are nearly always aware they are talking to an actor
- Many people feel embarrassed about ‘performing’ in front of colleagues or peers
- In these situations, people do not always behave as they usually would, making discussion or positive outcomes difficult
- There is little room for discussion or feedback as often comments might be taken as personal criticism.
In Forum, the audience watch actors play out a scene (written in consultation with the clients). Then comments and discussion are invited, the audience get the chance to approach a scenario from both the perspectives of all the participants, not just the person filling their own work role. The benefits are:
- Safety, leading to the freedom to comment openly and honestly
- The chance to consider problems from ‘the other’ viewpoint
- The chance to redirect scenes, giving instructions to the actors as to how to approach a situation
- The opportunity to ‘hot seat’ a character – speaking directly to them and questioning them.
We use this method for such clients and subjects as:
- Dundee Medical School – ethics
- Age Concern – Elder Abuse
- NHS (various) - palliative care, breaking bad news, GP training, patient care
- Steering groups – re-planning hospital departments, dealing with public consultation, business and the community
- East Renfrew District Council, Argyll & Clyde Health Board, Argyll & Bute Council – a joint approach to homelessness
- Various Carers’ Groups – carers’ health, facilities for carers
